Alberta Express Entry Stream

Learn how Express Entry candidates may receive provincial nomination through Alberta’s Express Entry Stream.

Alberta Express Entry Stream:

For candidates already in the federal Express Entry pool, the Alberta Express Entry Stream offers a powerful opportunity to secure a provincial nomination and significantly boost your chances of receiving an Invitation to Apply (ITA) for permanent residence. This is not a stream you can apply to directly; instead, Alberta actively selects and invites qualified candidates who meet the province’s specific economic and labour market needs.

At Career Plus Immigration, we provide trusted guidance on how to position your Express Entry profile to attract a Notification of Interest (NOI) from Alberta. We understand that this process can feel uncertain, and our expertise is here to bring legal clarity and peace of mind to your journey.

To improve your chances of selection, it is essential to maintain a strong and accurate Express Entry profile, including up-to-date work experience, language test results, and education credentials. Alberta often prioritizes candidates with ties to the province, such as work experience, job offers, or family connections. Additionally, certain occupations aligned with labour shortages may receive preference. Timing, profile optimization, and strategic planning play a crucial role in receiving a Notification of Interest, making professional guidance a valuable advantage.

What is the Alberta Express Entry Stream?

This stream allows the Alberta Advantage Immigration Program (AAIP) to nominate a limited number of qualified candidates from Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada’s (IRCC) Express Entry system. A nomination from Alberta adds 600 additional Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) points to your profile, virtually guaranteeing you will receive an ITA in a subsequent federal draw.

Who is this for?
This stream is designed for Express Entry candidates who:

  • Have an active profile in the federal Express Entry pool.
  • Demonstrate strong ties to Alberta (e.g., work experience, a job offer, or family connections).
  • Work in an occupation or sector that supports Alberta’s economic development and diversification priorities.

Eligibility and Selection Factors

To be considered for an invitation, you must first meet the criteria for one of the federal Express Entry programs (Federal Skilled Worker, Canadian Experience Class, or Federal Skilled Trades). The AAIP then selects candidates based on several factors:

  • Active Express Entry Profile: You must have a valid Express Entry profile number and Job Seeker validation code.
  • Stated Interest in Alberta: Your profile should indicate an interest in immigrating to Alberta.
  • Minimum CRS Score: While the minimum score changes with each draw, having a competitive score increases your chances. The AAIP may select candidates with scores as low as 300 if they meet other strategic priorities.
  • Alberta Job Offer: Having a full-time job offer from an Alberta employer is a significant advantage.
  • Alberta Work Experience or Education: Past work or study in the province demonstrates strong ties.
  • Family Connection: Having a relative (parent, child, or sibling) who is a permanent resident or citizen in Alberta.

Specialized Pathways with Expedited Processing

Alberta has created several priority pathways under this stream to address critical labour shortages. Candidates who qualify for these pathways may benefit from expedited processing.

1. Dedicated Health Care Pathway

This pathway is for healthcare professionals with an eligible job offer from an Alberta employer. If you are licensed to practice in one of the eligible healthcare professions in Alberta, you may be invited to apply.

2. Accelerated Tech Pathway

Designed for tech professionals, this pathway fast-tracks nominations for individuals with a job offer in an eligible tech occupation from an Alberta employer in a designated tech industry. A separate web form must be submitted to be considered.

3. Law Enforcement Pathway

This pathway targets individuals with a job offer from an Alberta Association of Chiefs of Police member in an eligible police services occupation.

The Application Process: From Interest to Nomination

The process is invitation-based and requires you to act quickly once contacted by the AAIP.

Create a Federal Express Entry Profile
Ensure your profile is complete, accurate, and indicates your interest in settling in Alberta.
Receive a Notification of Interest (NOI)
If you meet Alberta's selection criteria, you will receive an NOI letter from the AAIP in your IRCC account. This is not a nomination; it is an invitation to apply for a nomination.
Submit Your Application to AAIP
Once you receive an NOI, you must submit a complete application through the AAIP online portal within a specified deadline. This involves providing detailed information and uploading all required supporting documents.
Assessment and Nomination
An AAIP officer will assess your application. If approved, you will receive a Nomination Certificate. Your Express Entry profile will be updated with 600 additional CRS points.

Post-Nomination: The Final Step with IRCC

Receiving the 600 points is a game-changer.

  1. Receive an Invitation to Apply (ITA): In the next Express Entry draw, your high score will ensure you receive an ITA from IRCC.
  2. Submit Your PR Application: You must then submit a complete application for permanent residence to IRCC within the 60-day deadline.
  3. Final Decision: IRCC will conduct final medical, security, and criminality checks before issuing your Confirmation of Permanent Residence (COPR).

Important Compliance Notes

Employer Fees are Illegal: It is against the law for an Alberta employer or recruitment agency to charge you any fees for a job offer or for supporting your immigration application.

Intent to Reside: You must demonstrate a genuine intention to live and work in Alberta upon becoming a permanent resident.
