AAIP Worker Expression of Interest (EOI) Points Grid

Learn how Alberta’s Expression of Interest system works and how candidates may be selected for provincial nomination.

AAIP Worker Expression of Interest (EOI) Points Grid

The Alberta Advantage Immigration Program (AAIP) does not select candidates on a first-come, first-served basis. Instead, it uses a merit-based system called the Worker Expression of Interest (EOI) to identify candidates who are most likely to succeed economically in Alberta.

Understanding your score is the first step in your journey to Permanent Residence. Your EOI score determines your ranking in the pool of candidates. Regular draws are conducted, and only those with the highest ranking or those meeting specific labour market needs are invited to apply.

At Career Plus Immigration, we provide the legal clarity you need to assess your standing accurately. This page details the scoring breakdown so you can evaluate your eligibility with confidence.

The EOI system evaluates multiple factors, including age, education, work experience, language proficiency, and adaptability. Additional points may be awarded for strong ties to Alberta, such as a valid job offer or prior work experience in the province. Because rankings can shift with each draw, even small improvements in your profile can significantly impact your position. Our team helps you identify strategic areas for improvement, ensuring your profile is optimized to achieve a competitive score and increase your chances of receiving an invitation.

Scoring Categories Overview

The AAIP Worker EOI system awards a maximum of 100 points. These points are divided into two main categories:

  • Human Capital Factors (Maximum 69 Points): These assess your personal ability to settle and succeed in Canada, including your education, language skills, and work history.
  • Economic Factors (Maximum 31 Points): These assess your specific contribution to the Alberta economy, such as a job offer, the location of that job, and whether your occupation is regulated.

How to Maximize Your EOI Score

A low score does not necessarily mean you are ineligible, but a high score significantly increases your peace of mind and chances of selection. If your score is competitive, consider these strategies:

  • Improve Language Scores: This is often the fastest way to gain points. Moving from a CLB 5 to a CLB 6 can gain you 2 points, but adding French proficiency (Bilingual Bonus) can add another 3 points.
  • Gain Alberta Experience: Prioritize working in Alberta. 6 months of experience inside the province is worth 10 points—significantly more than foreign experience.
  • Look Outside Major Cities: While Edmonton and Calgary are popular, a job offer in a rural community can award you 5 extra points for location, plus potentially another 6 points if it falls under the Rural Renewal Stream.

Certify Your Trade: If you work in a trade, obtaining your Alberta Qualification Certificate (AIT) is worth a massive 10 points.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Inaccurate EOI profiles are a leading cause of refusal. When calculating your score, be wary of these common errors:

  • Overclaiming Language: Do not guess your CLB level. You must have valid test results (IELTS General or CELPIP General) that are less than 2 years old at the time of submission.
  • Claiming Family Points Incorrectly: You can only claim points for a parent, child, or sibling. Cousins, uncles, and aunts do not count for the Family Connection points (unless grandfathered under specific previous criteria).
  • Job Offer Misclassification: Ensure your job offer is “permanent and full-time.” Contract work with an end date may not qualify for the full job offer points.

Regulated Occupation Errors: You cannot claim the 10 points for a regulated occupation if you are still in the process of getting licensed. You must hold the certificate at the time of EOI submission.
