Federal Skilled Worker Program Canada

Understand eligibility and requirements for the Federal Skilled Worker Program under Express Entry.

Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSW)

The Federal Skilled Worker (FSW) program is a cornerstone of Canada’s economic immigration system, designed for professionals and skilled workers with foreign work experience who wish to become permanent residents. Managed through the Express Entry system, the FSW program uses a points-based grid to select candidates who have the skills, education, and experience to contribute to the Canadian economy.

Successfully navigating the FSW program starts with a thorough understanding of its unique eligibility requirements and points system. This is your first step towards entering the competitive Express Entry pool.

At Career Plus Immigration, we provide the comprehensive legal support you need to build a strong FSW application. We offer a detailed eligibility assessment to clarify your chances of success and guide you through every stage of your immigration journey.

The FSW Selection Factors Grid (67-Point System)

If you meet the minimum requirements, IRCC will then assess your profile based on six selection factors. Your goal is to score at least 67 points.

1. Language Skills (Maximum 28 points)

You can get up to 24 points for your first official language (English or French) and up to 4 points for your second official language. Points are awarded based on your test results (CLB level).

2. Arranged Employment (Maximum 10 points)

You can receive 10 points if you have a valid job offer of at least one year from a Canadian employer. The offer must be for a full-time, non-seasonal position.

3. Adaptability (Maximum 10 points)

You can earn points for factors that suggest you and your spouse or common-law partner will adapt well to life in Canada. This includes your partner’s language level, your past study or work in Canada, and having relatives in Canada.

Points are awarded based on your level of education, as verified by an ECA for foreign credentials.

The FSW Application Process

Assess Eligibility
Confirm you meet the minimum work experience, language, and education requirements.

Use the grid above to calculate your points. You must score at least 67 to proceed.
Gather Your Documents
Obtain your language test results (IELTS, CELPIP, etc.) and your Educational Credential Assessment (ECA).
Create an Express Entry Profile
If eligible, you can submit a profile to the Express Entry pool. This is where you will be assigned a Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score.
Receive an Invitation to Apply (ITA)
If your CRS score is high enough, you will be invited to apply for permanent residence.
Submit Your Application
After receiving an ITA, you have 60 days to submit your complete application for permanent residence.

Key Considerations for Applicants

  • FSW vs. CRS Points: The 67-point grid is a minimum eligibility requirement to enter the Express Entry pool under the FSW program. It is not the same as the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score, which is used to rank you against other candidates in the pool. A high FSW score does not guarantee a high CRS score.
  • Accuracy is Essential: Any misrepresentation of your work experience, education, or other factors can lead to your application being refused and a five-year ban from applying to Canada.
  • Strategic Profile Management: Your Express Entry profile is not static. You can take steps to improve your CRS score while you are in the pool, such as improving language scores or gaining more experience.
