Learn about the Super Visa allowing parents and grandparents to visit Canada for extended periods.

Super Visa for Parents and Grandparents: Reuniting Families in Canada

For many Canadians and permanent residents, family is everything. However, standard visitor visas often limit how long your loved ones can stay with you, forcing frequent departures and re-entries. The Super Visa offers a powerful solution for families who want to spend quality time together without the stress of constant renewals.

The Super Visa is a multi-entry visa that provides multiple entries for a period up to 10 years. The key difference is the authorized length of stay: unlike a standard visitor visa which typically allows a 6-month stay, the Super Visa allows eligible parents and grandparents to stay in Canada for up to 5 years at a time.

This extended stay option is ideal for new grandparents who want to help raise grandchildren or aging parents who wish to spend their golden years surrounded by family. However, the application process is rigorous, with strict financial and insurance requirements.

At Career Plus Immigration, we understand that these applications represent more than just paperwork; they represent time with your family. We provide the structured guidance you need to navigate the income requirements and insurance policies, ensuring your application is robust and compliant.

Eligibility Criteria: Do You Qualify as a Sponsor?

The Super Visa is unique because it assesses both the applicant (the parent/grandparent) and the inviter (also referred to as the host child/grandchild in Canada). To be eligible, specific criteria must be met.

1. Relationship Requirements

  • The Host: You must be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident of Canada.
  • The Applicant: Must be the parent or grandparent of the host. (Note: Dependents of parents/grandparents are not eligible for this visa).

2. Financial Support (LICO)

As the host child or grandchild, you must prove that your household meets the minimum necessary income, known as the Low Income Cut-Off (LICO). The LICO threshold is set each year by the federal government and is determined by the total number of family members in your household, including yourself, your spouse or partner, any dependents, and the parents or grandparents you are inviting.

Below is a reference table for the current LICO based on family size:
You must use the total number of individuals supported to determine your minimum income requirement. Make sure to check the most recent LICO amounts, as they are updated annually by IRCC.

  • The income threshold depends on the size of your family unit (including the visiting parents/grandparents).
  • Proof of income can include Notice of Assessment (NOA) for the most recent tax year, T4/T1 slips, or an employment letter with pay stubs.

3. Valid Medical Insurance

Because Super Visa holders are not eligible for Canadian public health insurance, applicants must have private medical insurance from a Canadian insurance company.

  • Coverage: Must be valid for at least 1 year from the date of entry.
  • Amount: Must provide at least $100,000 in emergency coverage.
  • Proof: You must submit proof that the medical insurance has been paid in full (quotes are not accepted).

4. Immigration Health and Security Checks

Like all visitors, parents and grandparents must be admissible to Canada.

  • Medical Exam: Applicants must undergo an immigration medical exam (IME) to prove they are in good health and not a burden on the Canadian healthcare system.
  • Security: They must have no criminal record or security concerns.

The Application Process: Step-by-Step

Applying for a Super Visa involves coordinating documents from both the host in Canada and the applicant abroad.

Step 1: Prepare the Letter of Invitation
The host must write a formal letter promising financial support for the duration of the visit. This letter must include the number of people in the host's household and detailed information about the invitee.
Step 2: Gather Financial and Insurance Documents
The host collects their tax documents (NOA, T4s) to prove income. The applicant purchases the required medical insurance policy from a Canadian provider.
Step 3: Complete the Immigration Medical Exam
It is often recommended to complete the medical exam upfront to avoid processing delays, though IRCC may send a request after the application is submitted.
Step 4: Submit the Application Online
Create an account on the IRCC portal. Upload all forms, the letter of invitation, proof of relationship (birth certificates), financial proofs, and insurance documents. Pay the processing fee.
Step 5: Biometrics
Once the application is submitted, the applicant will receive a letter to provide biometrics (fingerprints and photo) at a local Visa Application Centre (VAC).
Step 6: Passport Request
Upon approval, IRCC will request the applicant's passport to affix the Super Visa counterfoil.

Key Considerations for Families

  • Duration of Stay: The defining feature of the Super Visa is the ability to stay for up to 5 years per entry. This offers stability and continuity for families.
  • Extensions: If your parents are already in Canada with a Super Visa and want to stay longer than 5 years, they may apply for an extension of up to 2 years.
  • Income Fluctuations: If your income is close to the LICO cutoff, be careful. IRCC strictly enforces these limits. We can help assess if your income meets the current year’s requirements.
  • Insurance Validity: If parents decide to leave Canada earlier than expected, some insurance companies may offer partial refunds, but coverage must always be active while they are in Canada.
