International Experience Canada (IEC): Work and Travel in Canada

For young people around the world, International Experience Canada (IEC) offers a unique opportunity to live, work, and travel in Canada. This program is built on reciprocal agreements between Canada and dozens of partner countries, designed to foster cultural exchange and help youth gain valuable international work experience. It’s a chance to build your resume, improve your language skills, and explore Canada’s diverse landscapes and vibrant cities.

The IEC program operates on a pool and invitation system, and each category has strict eligibility rules. Understanding which stream you qualify for and how to create a strong profile is essential. A mistake in your application can mean missing out on a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.

At Career Plus Immigration, we provide the legal clarity you need to navigate the IEC process with confidence. We are your trusted immigration partner, ensuring your journey to Canada starts on the right foot.

Eligibility Criteria: Which IEC Category is Right for You?

To participate in IEC, you must first be a citizen of a country that has a youth mobility agreement with Canada. You must also meet the age requirement for your country, which is typically 18-30 or 18-35.

The IEC program is divided into three distinct categories:

1. Working Holiday

This is the most popular and flexible category. It provides you with an open work permit, allowing you to work for almost any employer anywhere in Canada. It’s ideal for those who want to fund their travels by working different short-term jobs.

  • Key Requirement: You do not need a job offer to apply.

2. Young Professionals

This category is for those who have a professional job offer in Canada that will contribute to their career development. The work permit issued is employer-specific, meaning you can only work for the employer listed on your permit.

  • Key Requirement: You must have a valid job offer in your professional field (TEER 0, 1, 2, or 3) before you apply.

3. International Co-op (Internship)

This stream is for students who need to complete a work placement or internship in Canada as part of their academic curriculum. The work permit is employer-specific and tied to your internship.

Key Requirement: You must be a registered student at a post-secondary institution in your home country and have a pre-arranged internship offer.

The Application Process: From Profile to Permit

The IEC application is a multi-step process that requires patience and attention to detail.

Complete the "Come to Canada" Questionnaire
Use the online tool on the IRCC website to see if you meet the basic eligibility criteria for IEC. If you do, you will receive a personal reference code.
Create Your IEC Profile
Use your reference code to create an online profile. You will answer questions about your nationality, education, and work experience. Once submitted, your profile will be entered into a pool of candidates for your country and chosen category.
Receive an Invitation to Apply (ITA)
IRCC conducts regular "rounds of invitations," inviting candidates from the pools to apply for a work permit. Invitations are issued randomly. If you are selected, you will receive an Invitation to Apply (ITA) in your account.
Submit Your Work Permit Application
Once you receive an ITA, you have a limited time (usually 20 days) to accept it and then submit your full work permit application. This includes providing your supporting documents, such as police certificates, proof of funds, and a medical exam if required.
Approval and Arrival
If your application is approved, you will receive a Port of Entry (POE) Letter of Introduction. You must present this letter to the border services officer when you arrive in Canada to receive your official work permit.

Key Considerations for IEC Participants

  • A One or Two-Time Opportunity: Depending on your country’s agreement, you may only be able to participate in IEC once or twice. It is crucial to get your application right.
  • Proof of Funds: All applicants must prove they have sufficient funds (currently $2,500 CAD) to support themselves upon arrival in Canada.
  • Health Insurance: You must have health insurance for the entire duration of your stay. You may be asked to show proof of this at the port of entry. Your work permit will not be issued for longer than your insurance coverage.
  • A Stepping Stone to Permanent Residence: The Canadian work experience gained through IEC can be a significant asset if you decide to apply for permanent residence later through a program like the Canadian Experience Class (CEC) in the Express Entry system.
